Easter Island Statue

Darrel, Greg, Savanarola, and I saw a guy at the Eureka Springs UFO conference with a picture of an Easter Island statue trying to pass it off as proof of flying saucers. He said the hat was not a hat at all but a UFO.

All the eyes on the Easter Island statues disappeared long ago. ONE statue has replica eyes that have been placed in it. (See above.)

Michael Duane Brumfield is the guy who made the claims about the statues and UFO's. See him here:

His flier "Flying Saucer Proof: We Find It" says:

"Heads of the Easter Island Looking 'Up'"

But the real Easter Island statue is looking straight ahead, like a sentinel. I think his photo is doctored. It was flattened, to make the hat look more like a UFO. And he inserted a flying saucer picture in the corner for comparison to the hat, so someone did Photoshop it a lot.

A better Easter Island statue is here in Connecticut. It's a puzzle. After staring at it a while, you can see a statue in the background.

The statue that Brumfield used in his propaganda was indeed the "genuine" Easter Island statue with modified eyes. If you'll look again at the picture Doug posted (which is not the very same picture in his information), the upper portion of the face is slightly sloped, as evidenced by the left edge of the face in the picture; when Brumfield scrunched the picture vertically, it had the effect of making the statue appear to be looking more upward than it really is. The picture also appears to be taken from lower to the ground, accentuating the effect. The scrunch also flattened the hat with topknot into a more traditional "flying saucer with occupant compartment bulb on top" shape.

Even if a flying saucer, i.e., illegal space aliens, had landed on Easter Island, why would the folks there carve its likeness on top of one of their sentinel statues? Goofy hats are not proof of flying saucers, even if the statue were looking up, as if to say, "Why the heck am I wearing this goofy hat?" rather than looking out to sea (in case a sea serpent shows up, maybe - just as good a connection as flying saucers).

When we asked Brumfield whether he would agree that saying that the rock on the head is better explained as a hat than as a flying saucer, he said that he would not agree. He said it is better explained as a flying saucer reference.

And we pointed out to him personally that scrunching up the picture makes the fat hat look more like a flying saucer, so in effect he was cheating. He denied it.

By the way, one thing that pissed off Savvy, Greg, and perhaps Darrel was that Brumfield kept saying of himself that he is a scientist. That didn't piss me off, though. He was so much a loon that it didn't bother me that he had one more delusion.

I wasn't at the conference and I don't have the flyer. That was just my first reaction seeing & reading the previous comments.

There are many self-proclaimed and pseudo-scientists out there. The clue is a refusal to revise the hypothesis when the evidence doesn't support it. Sort of like the guy (I forget his name) who brought the Binet IQ test to America. He revised the test for Americans - his purpose was to prove the natural superiority of white christians. The test showed IQ rantings of: 1) Jews, 2) white northerners, 3) black northerners, 4) white southerners, 5) black southerners. I don't remember the study well enough to state categorically, but I think Hispanics and Asians were lumped in with blacks. Native Americans weren't tested. The man spent the rest of his life not only denying the validity of his own test, but trying to revise the test so it WOULD prove what he wanted it to. Many are emotionally bonded to their ideas, which is really sad. Others, of course, like the former president of the Academy of Sciences who's been shilling for Exxon on global warming, do it for money.

Not that I was totally fine with his calling himself a bona fide scientist, but I was more upset that he was presenting that trash as "scientific evidence" when it was neither scientific nor evidence.

Maybe Moses goes in for time travel paradoxes - Back to the Future and all that - I mean, if you can believe the bible, you can believe anything. Fundies have nothing on Lewis Carroll's White Queen and her "6 impossible things before breakfast". Darrel has pointed out many, but even he doesn't have a count (at least he didn't put it in his book) of the number of impossible things in the bible - and I mean impossible in the sense of reports being considered true even though mutally exclusive. I'm not even going to go there as far as "miracles" are concerned.
