Mel Gibson Bashes Jews
Mel Gibson Bashes Jews
Mel Gibson was arrested early Friday morning for driving under the influence of alcohol, and then went on a profanity laced tirade, verbally abusing the arresting officer and other officers in the station house and spewing religious epithets. L.A. County Sheriffs Deputy James Mee says that Gibson became increasingly agitated and swearing uncontrollably after being pulled over. Mee agreed not to cuff Gibson, but when Gibson was asked to get inside the deputys car, Gibson refused and tired to escape. Gibson was quickly subdued. Once inside the car, Gibson began slamming himself against the interior of the car and yelling, "You mother fucker. I'm going to fuck you." Deputy Mee wrote:
"Gibson almost (continually) threatened me saying he 'owns Malibu' and will spend all of his money to 'get even' with me."
Gibson then launched into a barrage of anti-Semitic statements:
"Fucking Jews ... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world. Are you a Jew?"
Late Saturday, Gibson issued this statement:
"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the LA County Sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person. I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said. Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry. I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."
Yikes. TMZ's report just kind of goes on and on, with Gibson slamming phones, calling a female officer "sugar tits" and almost pissing on the floor. There's bad and then there's bad and then there's this. Setting yourself up as the last pious man in Hollywood and then getting a DUI is bad. Getting a DUI and then ranting about "the Jews" is roughly 8 billion times worse. If you're a guy, "bad" is having a heart attack. This is having a heart attack while wearing panties. "Bad" is dying, this is dying while the paramedic cuts off your training bra. And also you went to high school with the paramedic. And had a crush on her. And she laughed when you asked her to prom. And your reunion is next week. That's Mel Gibsson today.

update - A new report this morning on TMZ says that Gibson has been pulled over twice before by the Malibu police for speeding on the Pacific Coast Highway, where the speed limit is 45 miles per hour. Gibson was clocked driving 87 in one incident, 74 in another, but was released both times without a citation.

It Isn't Over

The ADL says that Gibson's apology is insufficient. Not all drunks go on antiSemitic rants. That Gibson did so suggests that there's more going on than booze.
Gibson also said he had been fighting alcoholism "all [his] adult life," but his blood alcohol level was actually not very high. In California, the legal limit is .08. Gibson was at 0.12.
If he weighs 190 lbs, drank 36 ounces of a beverage with 12% alcohol, over the course of 2 hours, he'd be at .12. That isn't really enough to get someone totally blitzed so that he would be ranting and raving like a lunatic. I suspect Gibson did more than just drink.

I suspect he was either mixing drinks (or mixing drinks with something else) or had just enough to take the PC lid off. Unfortunately a lot of christians, especially fundies, are anti-semites. It goes back some 1800 years when the christian religious power center shifted from Jerusalem to Rome. To get away with that, the would-be powers had to convince the followers that Jews rather than Romans killed Jesus. You can see to this day how good a job THEY did on "the big lie". However, Gibson was exhibiting aggressive behavior, including sexually aggressive behavior, that indicates whatever he was doing (alcohol, drugs, whatever) allowed expression of a slew of socially unacceptable ideas frequently found residing in the self-righteous breast.

Ari Emanuel, the model for the Jeremy Piven character Ari Gold on "Entourage" and co-founder of the powerhouse talent agency Endeavor, has called for Hollywood to shun Mel Gibson in the wake of his anti-Semitic remarks during his arrest Friday morning. Emanuel posted a blog on the left-wing Huffington Post saying, among other things:
"I wish Mel Gibson well in dealing with his alcoholism, but alcoholism does not excuse racism and anti-Semitism ... When "The Passion of the Christ" came out, Gibson was quoted as categorically denying any anti-Semitism attributed to him ... Now we know the truth. And no amount of publicist approved contrition can paper it over ... People in the entertainment community, whether Jew or gentile, need to demonstrate that they understand how much is at stake in this by professionally shunning Mel Gibson and refusing to work with him, even if it means a sacrifice to their bottom line. There are times in history when standing up against bigotry and racism is more important than money."

America is a free country and Gibson can say and feel any old way he wants to. But we are also free to follow Ari Emanuel's advice and shun Gibson, avoid his movies, etc. I think that's a very good idea. No need to monetarily support behavior I don't agree with. (Wish I could do the same with my taxes being used for the invasion of Iraq and subsidizing the vast petrochemical industry - which includes fuels, agribiz, and drugs.)

Gay Bashing Too
DOUG
In an interview a few years ago Gibson began a cycle similar to what he is going through now. He was asked what he thought of gays and he said some offensive remark about anal sex. He was denounced by gay rights organizations (who remarked that some of his films had offensive gay stereotypes), so Gibson asked to meet with them to figure out how to go about healing. The same thing he just did about his Jew-bashing.
BUT--a videotape was taken of Gibson arriving at the police station for booking, and apparently it is so horrendous with regard to his anti-Semitic remarks that when this thing gets out the word is that Gibson is going to really feel some major career hurt.

Mel's career is OVER - well, I say that as a reasonable person thinking reasonably. However, Hollywood is weird. When Woody Allen was 52, he was taking naked pictures of and having sex with his 17-year-old adopted stepdaughter. And he was accused of molesting his 8-year-old stepdaughter. But his career is fine. Roman Polanski drugged and raped a 13-year old when he was 43, then received a standing ovation at the Academy Awards when he won Best Director for "the Pianist". So, Mel Gibson may be a hero in a decade or so, you never know...

I bet the tape isn't released. I think he will recover somewhat. His dad is a rabid anti-semtic lunatic and probably hammered this crap into his head. What goes in, comes out. Maybe now he will work to get the junk in his head fixed. It took me years to get the Jehovah's Witness crap my parents hammered into my head, fixed, (somewhat).

Political cartoonist Pat Oliphant is apparently under the impression it was beaten into him by nuns at Catholic school. Possible, of course, although that severe an anti-semitic outlook was largely erased by WWII. I certainly didn't run across it in my childhood and my neighborhood was over half RC.
