Principal Returns After Six-Day Suspension for Giving Student a 'Wedgie'
10-24-2006 6:59 PM

LIVINGSTON, Mont. -- The principal of Park High School returned to school Tuesday after a six-day suspension for giving a student a "wedgie." The Livingston School District Board held a special meeting Monday and approved Superintendent Hannibal Anderson's recommendation that Principal Eric Messerli be allowed to return to work.

"It has been clearly recognized and stated that the behavior is inappropriate, unprofessional and unacceptable," Anderson said.

Messerli's behavior "warrants substantial disciplinary action" but was not sufficient grounds for a recommendation for termination, he said.

Messerli was suspended for two days without pay and four days with pay for grabbing a Park High senior's soccer jersey and pulling it over his head and giving the student a "wedgie" by pulling up on the waist band of his underwear. The incident happened on Oct. 5 at a junior varsity soccer game.

Messerli cried Monday as he read a statement to the board and the public.

"I've made mistakes in my life, but none have had the impact that this one has had," he said.

He said his first reaction was to resign, but he wanted to "tackle this mess" head on...

"It was meant in playfulness," Anderson said.

This just in:

FRIDAY, Oct. 27 (HealthDay News) -- The testosterone-fueled American male may be losing his punch.

Over the past two decades, levels of the sex hormone in U.S. men have been falling steadily, a new study finds.

For example, average total testosterone levels in men aged 65 to 69 fell from 503 nanograms/decileter (ng/dL) in 1988 to 423 ng/dL in 2003.

The reasons for this trend are unclear, said researchers at the New England Research Institutes in Waterdown, Mass. They noted that neither aging nor certain other health factors, such as smoking or obesity, can fully explain the decline.

"Male serum testosterone levels appear to vary by generation, even after age is taken into account," study lead author Thomas G. Travison said in a prepared statement.

There is also a recent study - I read it on Huffington Post - saying that increased cell phone use is linked to decreased sperm count. Cell phones - the American Republic's equivalent to lead in the Roman Republic (and Empire, for that matter).

Bob Park had this to say regarding this in his latest newsletter:

***
4. CELL PHONES ARE ATTACKING SPERM? SO BAN THE DAMN CELL PHONES.
If they're not attacking sperm, ban them anyway. But there is
not a chance that the reported low sperm counts among heavy cell
phone users, reported at the American Society of Reproductive
Medicine Conference in New Orleans on Sunday, had anything to do
with cell phone radiation. The wavelength is far too long to
have any direct chemical effect and the microwave heating from a
cell phone is easily handled by the body's temperature regulating
mechanism. It's too small to affect sperm, even if you put the
phone in your underpants. Ashok Agarwal of the Cleveland Clinic
in Ohio, studied 364 men at a fertility clinic in Mumbai, India.
The real question is what they talk about for four hours a day.

Bob Park is pointing out the suggested cause is incorrect - hopefully he, and those reading his comments, don't take that to mean the event isn't occurring. That's the same problem we've had over the years with nutrition and have currently with global warming - if the suggested cause for the problem is wrong, the problem doesn't exist.
