At least once upon a time, although recruiters can - and have - always lied, anything you could get them to put in writing, you could depend on. Basically, whatever the recruiter says, the comeback is, I'll sign up when I see that in writing on service letterhead and co-signed by the unit commanding officer. Having skipped that little step is how my younger sister ended up serving a hitch in the Navy, several hitches in the Navy reserve, followed by a hitch in the Army. Having not skipped that step is how my younger son ended up not serving at all.

All the services are desparate (have you seen the signs on 6th street across from Fayetteville High?) - but the Marines are more desparate than anybody else.
