From the Arkansas Times

The best and worst of 2006

"Best dunk

One of the denominational papers carried an article about Pastor Ronnie Floyd of Springdale and his unsuccessful campaign in June to head up the Southern Baptist Convention. The article told of Pastor Ronnie’s gigantic church and of some of its wretched excesses, including a high-dollar children’s baptistry made to resemble a toy firetruck. The article went on to say: “The unique baptistry, created by Disney designer Bruce Barry, is part of a $270,000 high-tech project for the church’s children’s worship area that includes video games, a light show, music videos and a bubble machine, according to Christianity Today. When a child is baptized in the firetruck-shaped baptistry, sirens blare and confetti is shot out of cannons.”

Hallelujah!"

Every kid is fascinated with fire trucks, bright red
machines with daring men aboard out to save life,
limb, and property. See, it's just an extension of
the Church, out to save souls before the flames
of hell can reach them. WTF did you expect them
to do with $270,000? Feed the poor, teach the illiterate?
C'mon this is Armani-Ronnie caring for his flock.

It's another way to "save" a kid - they don't understand what you're talking about when it comes to sin/hell/salvation/etc (I once asked an 8-year-old who'd been "saved" 3 times already what she'd been saved from and she didn't know) - but they understand playing in firetrucks. Offer them that option - with cannons and confetti when you dump them in the water - and they'll go for it every time.

As to what a "social darwinist" church will do with money - you expected following the words of their supposed "Master"?
